Site News!

I'm sure you've noticed it, but Rainbow Nerd now has a logo!  Now we're almost professional!  Let us know what you think about it in the comments.  Personally, I am loving it but I'm biased.  Though since this is my blog I'm allowed to be.

It's all thanks to Rainbow Nerd's very best rainbow nerd friend over at Worldly Designs.  Go take a look at all the wonderful stuff posted on the site!  It'd mean a lot to us and our wonderful designer.

And stay tuned for more lovely updates and posts as we continue to roll onward with more content.  To those who have left comments- thank you!  To those who haven't commented yet- well don't you think you should?

Yaoi!: Possible Gay Male Wish Fulfillment?

Yaoi! is a series we'll be running that will look at the various facets of gay manga and anime.  It's a semi-serious series that will cover a broad range of topics and opinions.  You're inclined to disagree of course- just don't go flaming the posts.  Cogent arguments might even get you highlighted here!  If you'd like to see anything specific, contact rainbownerdblog@gmail.com to provide a suggestion on a series or topic you'd like to see.

Last week we looked at yaoi and how it's mainly a genre suited to straight women as a way to fulfill their own fantasies in a safe way.  Though is it only suited to that audience?    While women are the primary target for such a genre we also have to look at those same themes discussed to see that it brings about a curious world in which homosexuality is often not the focus of the drama between characters.  Granted this is often seen as a way to avoid realism and downplay true societal pressure, but we can also look at it from the perspective of a gay male.  In a world where homosexuality is often denounced and considered a sin, yaoi gives us a glimpse into a world where those troubles are replaced by mere melodrama thus showing us a society that has largely moved beyond bothering about the morality, or lack thereof, of being gay.

First Impressions: Pokemon Black 2/White 2

I know I just posted a whole list about Pokemon this week so putting up a second Pokemon piece in such a short time-span seems ridiculous but this is my blog so I shall do as I please.  And also because I expected to be too busy to get as far as I did, I've surprised myself that I've gotten my 4th badge already.  Some of you may already have your 8th and think you're so cool but the rest of us have to work in offices that don't let you play DS at your desk.  It's a sad, cruel world after all.  We can't all work at the Battle Company where they just do Pokemon battles all day.  How do they even make money?  The world may never know.

Anyway, on with the first impressions.  And mild spoilers ahead for those who don't read Serebii every day like I do.

Judgey Pants: Card Game Review - Sentinels of the Multiverse

Judgey Pants is our review series here on Rainbow Nerd.  We'll be reviewing board games, card games, video games, anime, books... whatever comes our way.  If we do get the game, book, or whatever as a review copy we'll let you know as well.  It's all about transparency here.  Plus, if you'd like us to take a look at something, let us know at rainbownerdblog@gmail.com.

Today's review is of a delightful little (well, big) card game that I was introduced to over the summer - Sentinels of the Multiverse.  It's a game of superheroes fighting supervillains and wrangling their way through dangerous environments.  It's a bit campy, a bit serious, and completely fun.  So let's take a look at what makes it so great.

Listings: 10 Pretty Good Unova Pokemon Desigins

Welcome to Listings - a listicle series in which I will judge things that I like or don't like.  As with anything else, you're free to dispute my claims and provide your own.  Of course, you gotta be respectful and all that jazz.  This is a judgey series but you don't have to be rude about things.  Gosh.  All rebuttals can be left in the comments or sent to rainbownerdblog@gmail.com

Our first list is going to be in honor of the release of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 that occurred over the weekend.  The games are the ever prevalent "third" game in any given generation now split into two parts with, for the first time in main game history, a sequel number.  While you are treading over territory from the first set of games, there are new places to visit, new people to see, and old Pokemon to catch!

News Rant: Nomura Says to Keep Waiting

Be warned, there are some spoilers ahead.

I understand that games take a while to create and publish.  I really do!  There's a lot that goes into creating games and a lot of people who need to work together to get it all done.  There's money involved, there's time involved, there may even be some hair pulling and eye gouging in the eleventh hour.  But Tetsuya Nomura says we need to keep waiting for Final Fantasy Versus XIII- a game that was started all the way back in 2006.  2006!
